Zanetti: Inter tried to sign Messi after Barcelona departure

After missing out on retaining the title by two points to rivals Milan last season, the Nerazzurri are running out of time to overhaul a 13-point gap to leaders Napoli this campaign with Luciano Spalletti s team showing no signs of slowing down the rampant pace that has seen them win 18 of their 21 top-flight games.

The Partenopei s sole defeat came at the hands of Inter in January, and Zanetti has mixed feelings about his team s efforts this term, saying: We could have done more in the league. We miss some points, but it s part of a path that this team is consistently carrying out.

Mistakes are normal with such a packed fixture list, but I ve always seen a team that wants to impose its style, trying to cause trouble for opponents.

We ve been able to react to d…

Nantes 0-3 Paris Saint-Germain: Mbappe scores twice as Galtier´s men cruise to victory

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain made it five wins from six Ligue 1 games this season with a 3-0 win over 10-man Nantes on Saturday.

Mbappe put the champions ahead shortly before the midway point of the first half with his sixth league goal of the campaign, before Nantes wing-back Fabio received his marching orders for a high challenge.

The France international grabbed his second early in the second half, before Nuno Mendes added a third as Christophe Galtier s men wrapped up maximum points with the minimum of fuss.

The result meant PSG returned to the top of Ligue 1 after Marseille had briefly usurped them earlier in the day with victory over Auxerre, while Nantes remained in 10th.

Ballon d´Or: The ´Ronaldo Final´ will go down as one of the Champions League greats

Cristiano Ronaldo has won his fifth Ballon d’Or. His finest night of the year came when Real Madrid thrashed Juventus in the Champions League final. Omnisport’s Matthew Scott was there to tell the tale.

The greatest Champions League final victory of the modern era could only ever have had Cristiano Ronaldo sitting on the throne as its master.

As Real Madrid and Juventus were finalising plans for their Cardiff showdown, it was speculated here that the iconic Ronaldo might be missing a final to call his own despite all those he has won. Safe to say we may ponder no more.

This truly was the Ronaldo Final .

What a stage to do it, too. A Ronaldo-inspired Los Blancos became the first team in the Champions League era to win back-to-back finals with a 4-…

England on verge of ´something amazing´ – Deschamps

France s World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps thinks England are on the verge of achieving something amazing after becoming a real force in international youth football.

After failing to qualify for Euro 2008, an inquest into development took place in English football, with the Football Association (FA) looking to other nations such as Germany and Spain for inspiration.

It took time for obvious results to be made, with the senior side only really starting to see the benefit at this year s World Cup when they reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1990, but youth success in recent years suggests that even better results could be on the horizon.

England s Under-17s and Under-20s both won their respective world titles in 2017, while the Under-19s were …

St Johnstone report ‘appalling’ racist abuse towards forward Diallang Jaiyesimi

St Johnstone have reported “appalling” racist abuse directed towards forward Diallang Jaiyesimi following his red card against Rangers.

A message was highlighted on the X – formerly known as Twitter – social media platform from an account which has now been deleted.

Jaiyesimi was sent off for a challenge on John Lundstram during St Johnstone’s 2-0 cinch Premiership defeat at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

We are aware of a racist tweet circulating that was aimed at Diallang Jaiyesimi tonight.

We firmly stand with DJ in this matter and are appalled that this unacceptable behaviour still exists in 2023.

We will pass this onto Police Scotland to investigate.

Say no to racism

Verratti to train as Pochettino looks to help PSG ´remove the past´ against Barca

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti will train ahead of Tuesday s Champions League clash with Barcelona, which Mauricio Pochettino is approaching with calm despite the weight of history on his team s shoulders.

Last season s finalists will face Barca at the Camp Nou for the first time since their collapse in the second leg of the last-16 tie between the two teams in 2017.

PSG led 4-0 from the first leg at the Parc des Princes but astonishingly lost 6-1 in the second as Barca pulled off the greatest comeback in Champions League history.

The cast of characters has changed significantly for both clubs since then. Neymar scored twice that night but is now in his fourth season with PSG, though he will miss this meeting with a groin injury.

Barcelona v Real Madrid: Iniesta´s most memorable Clasicos

Andres Iniesta is set to play in his final Clasico on Sunday as his glittering Barcelona career nears its end.

With little other than pride riding on the biggest club game in world football, Iniesta will likely have even more licence to mark his last appearance in the fixture with a flourish.

Should he be unable to do so, the 33-year-old Spain great will still have plenty of fond memories of games against Madrid to look back on. Here we reflect on five of his best Clasicos.

Ronaldinho rips apart Real November 19, 2005: Real Madrid 0-3 Barcelona

Introduced from the bench for Lionel Messi in November 2005, Iniesta was able bear witness to perhaps the defining performance of Ronaldinho s career as the Brazilian tore apart Madrid almost single-hand…

History offers little hope for Man United, Porto to be wary of Dzeko – Champions League in Opta numb

History is stacked against Manchester United in their bid to overturn a 2-0 first-leg home defeat to reach the Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s United travel to Paris without 10 injured first-team players and the suspended Paul Pogba, meaning five youth players have been drafted into the squad.

PSG hold a handsome lead thanks to first-leg goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe, while United s recent record in Champions League knockout games provides little source for optimism.

On top of that, no team has ever progressed from a knockout tie in the Champions League after losing the first leg at home by two goals or more.

Wednesday s other contest sees Porto host Roma hoping to…

Chelsea 2-0 Everton: Tuchel extends unbeaten start as Blues boss

Thomas Tuchel s impressive start to life as Chelsea head coach continued with a 2-0 win over Everton at Stamford Bridge on Monday.

The German has now overseen an unbeaten stretch of 11 games since taking over from Frank Lampard on January 26, with this result the Blues eighth win in that period.

Ben Godfrey s first-half own goal put the hosts ahead before Jorginho s penalty after the break ensured Everton s winless run at Chelsea would stretch to 26 Premier League games.

Chelsea remain in fourth but move back to within three points of third-placed Leicester City winners against Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend  while the Toffees are now four points further back in fifth.

Two goals. Three points!

Guardiola backs Chris Wilder: He´d be fighting for the title if he had my job

Pep Guardiola has no doubt Chris Wilder would be challenging for Premier League glory if he managed Manchester City.

Wilder s time at Sheffield United looked to be coming to an end as Guardiola spoke out on Friday, with the Blades propping up the top-flight table after mustering just 14 points from 28 games.

That is a far cry from the situation with Guardiola s City, who have 68 points and look to be streaking towards a third championship in four seasons.

Yet Guardiola is known to rate Wilder, who led United to promotion in 2018-19 and to a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League last term.

If he would be here he would be fighting to be champion. If I would be in Sheffield maybe I would fight to not be relegated, Guardiola told a news conference.
